FILIPE REAL MARINHEIRO

Filipe Real Marinheiro (b. 1990, Portugal) is a Lisbon-based painter whose practice explores the constant physical mutation of space, the erasure of the mark, and the pull of degradation as a way of interrogating the urban environment. His painting returns again and again to image and to painting in its purest form, holding onto an uncompromising attitude that admits error, emotion, and spontaneity as part of the work rather than as flaws to correct — often surfacing a sudden, almost unthinking impulse to act. Working primarily in acrylic and spray paint on raw canvas, often layered with paper and canvas collage, Marinheiro treats his materials as vehicles for an idea rather than an end in themselves. Each canvas registers a particular change, at once physical and emotive, through bold gestural strokes set against fields of collage and raw ground. Though his paintings can read as quick and instinctive, each is the product of deliberation, study, and revision. The resulting compositions set positive and negative space, and the recurring black-andwhite presence of the canvas, into a quiet dialogue — leaving the viewer free to sit with the emotion held in the work and project their own meaning onto it. Marinheiro has presented solo exhibitions in Lisbon and Grândola and participated in group shows across Portugal, Italy, and Germany, alongside self-published and collaborative print projects and an artist residency in Florence, Italy. In 2022 he received an Honourable Mention for Art Matters 5 at Galerie Biesenbach, Köln.
